A friend at church is expecting and so I thought that the baby needed a quilt! Her precious baby boy is due in about 4 weeks and the baby shower was this past weekend. A while back she found out that I made quilts and enjoyed sewing and she mentioned casually how she has always wanted quilts for her children. She had no idea that I would remember that comment and when she opened her gift tears filled her eyes.
This is the first quilt that I have given as a gift to someone who wasn't family. I had no idea it would be received in the way it was. I mean, to me, this quilt wasn't a big deal. I just sewed some charm squares together and did some straight line quilting. But to the mommy-to-be it meant the world. It was such a great feeling that something I created brought that much joy to someone.

I love to give homemade gifts, just seems to mean so much more to the receipient. My girls were both given quilts and we used them till I thought they would fall apart, then I packed them up and stored them.. Maybe when the grandkids come along I will get them down and repair them.
ReplyDeleteaww, that's great! that's why we do what we do... :-) I bet you'll give more away now.... I love seeing their reactions or hearing about it- I don't always give the quilts in person. Once our church was going to a women's shelter and I had given them a "pile" of quilts to give away, one comment was that a girl got the quilt and she was so afraid to get it wet when they left to go outside, she tugged it under her shirt.

ReplyDeleteI love the fabrics you chose for this little boys quilt! It looks wonderful! A co-worker of mine is expecting a baby boy and I've thought about making a quilt for her, but I don't know her that well so I don't know if she would think it's weird. :P I don't have any babies in my life to make quilts for, and they are so fast I think I might just do it. :)
ReplyDeleteI think it would be a lovely gift. A coworker told me last week that the quilt I made for her baby (now 16-year old) daughter still resides at the foot of her bed and is still used every day. I don't think you can go wrong with a handmade gift.
